DESCRIPTION:
Cordyceps is often called the caterpillar fungus because of its thin, tubular shape. In Chinese folk tradition it is called dong chong xia cao. There are about 400 species of Cordyceps, most of which come from Bhutan, China, Korea, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam. The best-known species used in supplementation isCordyceps sinensis. The mushroom has a long, finger-like shape and is usually brown or orange-brown in colour.
Among the active substances found in Cordyceps are, among others: polysaccharides. These are carbohydrate molecules made up of long chains of smaller monosaccharides (simple sugars), linked by glycosidic bonds. In nature, these natural compounds perform a wide range of functions, such as energy storage, cellular signalling and structural support.
