Alpha Lipoic Acid
What is Doctor’s Best Alpha-Lipoic Acid?
Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid that performs vitamin-like roles in the body. It functions as a co-enzyme in the metabolism of carbohydrates and is required for synthesis of acetyl CoA, a key metabolite in the cellular process that turns glucose (blood sugar) into energy. Because the body produces alpha-lipoic acid on its own, it is not classified as a true vitamin. But as with other non-essential nutrients, internal production may not always be optimal.
How does it work?
Alpha-lipoic acid is a key factor in the cellular process that metabolizes glucose for energy production. Aging is accompanied by a decreased ability of the liver to recycle ascorbic acid following oxidative stress. R-lipoic acid, after two weeks of supplementation to aged rats, reversed the age-related impairment of ascorbic acid recycling and concentration in liver cells. Aging is associated with oxidative stress in the brain. The brain’s high rate of metabolism make it particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress. Since alpha-lipoic-acid interrupts cellular oxidative processes in both its oxidized and reduced forms, it plays a modulatory role in the brain and nervous system.
Why should I take Doctor’s Best Alpha-Lipoic Acid?
An ideal antioxidant would have the ability to quench a wide variety of free radicals, to support the functioning of other antioxidants, to bind or “chelate” metal ions that can generate free radicals, to function in aqueous and fatty environments in tissues, cells, and extracellular spaces. Alpha-lipoic acid has been termed the “universal antioxidant.” As we age, our ability to synthesize alpha-lipoic acid decreases and levels of oxidized proteins that interfere with mitochondrial efficiency increase. Supplementing with alpha-lipoic acid, a “mitochondrial nutrient”, addresses this situation.

I bought this brand before,from another website-340caplets for £40
This item,120,for £27-quite expensive-but with all craziness Coronavirus related,in matter of 3days all vit is sold out.
Is very good brand-I’ve used is from birth of my son-10months.6 per day.Easy to swallow-but important with plenty of water,so it doesn’t stick in your throat,as it melt, and all acid content doesn’t burn from inside.
Unfortunately stopped for couple of days-as old bottle’s finished, and new one is somewhere else, but not here yet.

I normally take vitamin C in the soluble tablet form as the regular tablets are a smaller dose than I would like. So I was glad to find these capsules. The trade-off is that they are pretty big capsules – I found they were best taken with water, as they are hard to swallow on their own. The fact that they are such a strong dose & are vegan-friendly is a sufficient trade-off for me but I would not recommend these for children.
When I’ve mentioned these to people, concerns have been voiced about concerns regarding the dosage. But these are not as strong as soluble tablets (1500mg) & too much vitamin C is not harmful – the body processes it very quickly & just deposits any excess via your urine. Plus the RDA has been criticised for being out of date & merely stating the minimum amount (i.e. just enough to prevent scurvy) as opposed to the amount needed for optimum nutrition.
I’m no expert, just a layman who’s read a couple of books & seen a documentary or two. My understanding is that vitamins gained through food are more likely to be absorbed by the body, so if you’re getting plenty of fruit then these are probably not necessary on a day-to-day basis. But I like to have high-strength vitamin C supplements ready for when I catch a cold, as apparently vitamin C has been proven to reduce their duration (although does not work as a preventative measure).
So on the basis of their strength & the vegan-friendly label, I will stick with this brand. I only wish they were slightly smaller.

What you make of these tablets depends very much on your attitude to taking vitamin supplements generally, as opinion is always split regarding their necessity. Personally, I take a general purpose multivitamin daily to cover any needs I may have, so I tend to have a supply of vitamins anyway, and feel all the better for it.
Where an increased dose of vitamin C is handy is in fighting colds and infection, so these tablets are useful for that…and I intend to hold back on these until needed, but I have taken 2 weeks worth in order to do this review.
These seem to me to be one of the best on the market. They look high quality, and contain no ingredients to be wary of. They are slightly larger than average, but I found that to be no problem, and they are best taken without food. I have had no ill effects from these, and as I am in generally good health anyway it is hard to say what their effect is. Better to be prepared though, so next time I feel a cold coming on I will dose myself with these. Until then I will continue with my usual supplements, as these seem too good to waste…..

Did my research and decided. Slightly bemused that they are sourced in Scotland, produced in US then back to UK for distribution ! Bit of a round robin going on there as I’m in the UK!

These capsules contain 1000mg Vit C, which is a very large dose – bear in mind that the NHS recommends 40mg a day (which they say you should be able to get from your diet). However, large doses of Vitamin C are said to boost the immune system and ward off colds – and I do take a daily supplement, especially in the winter.
Yes the capsules are large – at over 2cm long they are considerably bigger than a standard ibuprofen capsule. However, being capsules they slip down a little easier than the (bullet-like) pills I get from Asda or Holland & Barrett. If you do find them hard to swallow, it is even possible to open them up and dissolve the powder inside in a glass of water – I tried this and it doesn’t taste bad at all.
The pot is not child-proof, which is great as Vitamin C is not toxic even in huge doses.
The price, however, leaves me gob-smacked. You can buy 250 x 1000mg tablets at Holland & Barrett for under £18, and at Asda they are even cheaper at £3 for 60. And both of these come with rosehips and bioflavonoids. I would need a lot of convincing of the additional benefits of having “Quali-C” to make me pay this premium price.
