Life Extension – Se-Methyl L-Selenocysteine
Advanced Form of Selenium
As an essential cofactor of glutathione peroxidase, selenium is an important antioxidant. Selenium is incorporated into proteins to make selenoproteins, which are important antioxidant enzymes. The antioxidant properties of selenoproteins help block cellular damage from free radicals. High doses of vitamin C (over one gram) may enhance the absorption of selenium. This mineral is best taken in conjunction with antioxidant supplements, such as vitamins C or E.
Se-Methyl L-Selenocysteine (SeMC) is a naturally occurring seleno-amino acid that is synthesized by plants such as garlic and broccoli. SeMC is an organoselenium compound and also more bioabsorbable than other forms. Unlike selenomethionine which is indiscriminately incorporated into proteins in place of methionine, SeMC is selectively incorporated into seleno-containing enzymes, i.e. selenoproteins, such as glutathione peroxidase.

Methyl-selenocysteine is the best form of selenium according to doctors I listen to on podcasts, including Saladino. I take this dose as I am on what is classed as a high dose of iodine, 50mg per week.

was worried these would be too harsh for my system, but they were fine. I believe it’s a Brassica product, which is fine. In the end, I went with a Selenium Thorned derived from Brazil nuts, but both are good choices.

I love this product. This form of selenium, for me, makes all the difference. Small capsules, easy to swallow – good dosage, good price.

This is my third bottle of selenium that I have used and taken. I opened the capsule and put the powder on my smoothie. Highly recommended brand.

A high quality selenium product that I take with Ubiqinon (150-300mg) daily for heart health. Good portion size and low price. The small capsule is easy to swallow. This form has been shown to have superior absorption rates compared to other forms of selenium used in supplements. Smells bad, but has so many health benefits that the smell and taste doesn’t hurt at all 🙂 Selenium supports metabolism, immunity, brain health, cardiovascular health, supports health thyroid and healthy skin, hair and nails. In fact, my nails and long hair are great with selenium. Selenium also neutralizes oxygen radicals and protects the body from oxidative stress.

Good supplement. I took it because I had a selen deficiency. It has a little smell, but that doesn’t bother me. My nutritionist told me to finish this packet and stop taking, to avoid an overdose.

have been taking Life Extension’s Se-Methyl L-Selenocysteine for about a month now and have noticed a significant improvement in my overall health. The capsules are easy to swallow and the dosage is right. I have always had issues with my immune system and found this supplement really helped boost it. I haven’t been sick since I started taking it, which is very important to me as I tend to catch any colds and flus that come along. I also appreciate that the capsules are vegetarian, as I try to follow a plant-based diet as much as possible. The price is also very reasonable compared to other selenium supplements on the market. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase of Se-Methyl L-Selenocysteine from Life Extension and will definitely purchase it again in the future. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their immune system and overall health.

natural organoselenium compound found in garlic and broccoli (Pubmed). Protective against hair, nails, immune system, thyroid etc. (supplement company). It is an important antioxidant (to protect cells from oxidative stress). It is a naturally occurring selen amino acid. It is a form that is more easily absorbed than other forms/types. Adding vitamin C (more than 1g) may increase absorption. Adding vitamin E can also be helpful in this regard. (Source: other company/supplement store).
