How does it work?
Both ubiquinol (CoQ10-H2) and ubiquinone (CoQ10) are metabolically active, and are found naturally in the body and in food sources. The two forms are interchangeable, as the body keeps the reduced and oxidized forms in the “total pool” at a constant ratio. The commonly available supplement form of coenzyme Q10 has been the oxidized form (ubiquinone), as until recently the reduced form was difficult to manufacture due to its rapid oxidation in the air. always thought that I took very good care of my teeth: I brushed my teeth 3 times a day (after breakfast, lunch and dinner), I flossed every day and I never haven’t had a cavity since I was probably 15. However, I haven’t been to the dentist for regular cleanings for years. I was devastated when I was first told that I had a severe case of receding gums when I was only 30 years old. Since then, I have consulted 3 different periodontists and had 3 surgeries: 2 tissue grafts and 1 bone graft. I now get my teeth cleaned every 4 months and use an electric toothbrush (Sonicare) at night (I always use a manual toothbrush in the morning). About 3 years ago many of my teeth still had 4-5mm pockets which scared me because I didn’t want to have another surgery. I did some research and found that coenzyme Q10 (or its form Ubiquinol, which some say is absorbed faster and for this reason recommended for people over 25) can help fight disease gums. Although I have been told by different hygienists that gum recession cannot be reversed, I now believe coQ10 can. After more than 2 years of taking Kaneka Ubiquinol (I usually only take one pill a day, and the pill is small, soft, and very easy to swallow), I’m happy to say that the number of puffiness has gone down to 2-3 mm in most of my teeth and some 4 mm. Also, there was once last year when a tooth became very sensitive for no apparent reason. Neither my dentist nor my periodontist found anything wrong with this tooth and recommended a toothpaste like Sensodyne. I knew sensodyne would just mask the problem, so I decided to take the Ubiquinol more consistently, and the sensitivity eventually went away. I noticed that even if I skip it for several days or a few weeks in a row it is fine, but if I don’t take it for more than about a month my tooth becomes sensitive again. Now when I hear someone complaining about receding gums or sensitive teeth, I tell them to try CoQ10 or Ubiquinol.
