What is Doctor’s Best Astaxanthin?
Doctor’s Best Astaxanthin is an antioxidant that supports healthy blood flow and vessel integrity, promotes a healthy, integrated immune response, and supports memory and other brain functions. Astaxanthin also enhances vision and relieves eye fatigue. Astaxanthin has beneficial effects on cell membranes that manage important life functions. The body cannot make astaxanthin, it must be consumed either through diet or supplementation. Astaxanthin is made by algae and moves up the food chain when the algae are consumed as food. It gives the red color to seafood such as salmon, trout, crab, shrimp, lobster, and krill, but these sources of astaxanthin are not common in most diets. Doctor’s Best is pleased to offer this nutrient in its natural form, as a concentrate from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis.
How does it work?
The molecular structure of astaxanthin is long and thin, with both ends having “polar” groups that are compatible with water while the middle segment is “nonpolar” and not water-compatible. This molecular structure allows astaxanthin to move into cell membranes without substantially affecting the membrane structure, astaxanthin is able to provide potent protection against cell damage, like the damage caused by free radicals. All cells have membranes and it is vital to maintain the health of these membranes so that the cell may function properly. Every cell membrane is an ultrathin sheet of lipids into which enzymes and other catalytic proteins are inserted. Intense metabolic activities within cell membranes typically generate highly reactive “free radical” substances. The damage caused by these free radicals can be attenuated by antioxidant activity. Astaxanthin provides cell membranes with a potent antioxidant defense against free radicals.

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant, which is why I was taking it. I wanted to take advantage of its anti-aging benefits. I don’t take it regularly anymore, plus I’m trying to get pregnant and I don’t know what effects it would have on the pregnancy. I also took the Now Foods brand, but it’s hard to tell what the difference is. I think I got it because it was on sale. The one from Now Foods that I was taking contained 4mg per capsule, but this one contained 6mg and I was interested in trying a higher dose. I don’t know, maybe one day I’ll start taking astaxanthin again after my pregnancy is over. I would like it to have long term positive effects on my health. Like if this helps you.

Use 6mg gel caps. Have purchased other brands but realized you have to take 3 for the same added benefit of 1 of Doctor’s Best brand. These are WELL WORTH THE PRICE.

use this type of astaxanthin for the premenopause I am in. It also helps my eyes, my skin, especially before summer. Delays aging and the appearance of wrinkles… I start drinking it in May and I don’t stop it until September. There are no sun spots (if you tend to get them), you don’t get burned on the beach (that doesn’t mean you have to give up beach oil), you get a nice complexion . I take it with fatty vitamins – omega 3, coQ10, beta-carotene, lycopene, sea buckthorn oil and fatty foods. I recommand it!!!

I have been using Doctors Best Astaxanthin for a long time, and after ordering a new bottle a couple weeks ago I found the ingredients are NOT as listed on this website or on the other bottles that I have used. They have added modified food strarch and carrageenan, and I can no longer use this product. So disappointed!!!
