Normolax is a dietary supplement containing Psyllium, but which includes a further “prebiotic” component such as FOS (fruit-oligosaccharides) that resist enzymatic degradation of the gastrointestinal tract and represent the nutrient substrate of microorganisms. FOS are short chains of fructose molecules, which, fermented by intestinal bacteria, produce lactic acid and short chain carboxylic acids. These, in turn, enter as carboxylic acids, succinic acid and pyruvic acid in the Krebs cycle to produce energy at the cell level. The fermentation that occurs is extremely useful as it leads to a selective stimulation of the growth of bacterial strains constituting the “good gut bacteria” such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Numerous clinical studies have shown the usefulness of FOS and their prebiotic activity in favouring the development of good gut bacteria to the detriment of the pathogenic one, in both children and the adults. Furthermore, recent research indicates that FOS significantly increases butyric acid levels in the intestine, further promoting a protective action against inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the colon.
Normolax, like all fibre-based supplements, if taken together with other drugs, can reduce intestinal absorption and therefore alter the effect, so they must be taken at least 1 hour before or at least 2-3 hours after ingesting Psyllium.
The use of Normolax is indicated in the resolution of episodes of constipation that can be defined as periodic or “occasional”. It is not indicated for the treatment of chronic constipation, where before any intake, an assessment and possible correction of the diet by the consumer might be necessary. It is important to dilute the content of one sachet in plenty of water. This will allow the formation of the characteristic gel, capable of restoring intestinal function and regaining its natural regularity, without irritating the intestinal wall. Ingest the content of one sachet, immediately after mixing it with water, fruit juices, freshly squeezed fruit juice, or even fruit smoothies or yogurt. Bear in mind that the normal gel formation is achieved while mixing the content with the drink or food, which is one of the typical characteristics of this product. It will be this gel and its thickness, to soften and moisturise the faecal mass and facilitate its evacuation.
