Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is naturally present in small amounts in various fruits and vegetables. The Finnish name for Xylitol is “koivusokeri”, or birch sugar, a reference to the extraction of Xylitol from birch bark. NOW® Pure Xylitol is derived from a Non-GMO corn source. Considerable amounts of Xylitol is formed in the body every day as a result of normal metabolic processes. Although it is classified as a carbohydrate, this sweet crystalline substance is slowly absorbed from the digestive tract and does not cause rapid rises in blood glucose. In addition, the caloric impact of Xylitol is typically about 40% lower than other carbohydrates, making it a healthy addition to any diet. Discovered simultaneously by French and German chemists in 1891, Xylitol has been safely used since the 1970’s as an ingredient in gums and candies. Dentists and Nutritionists alike encourage the use of Xylitol due to its unique and clinically proven dental benefits. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that cannot be utilized by bacteria in the mouth. Xylitol…a safe alternative for your sweet tooth.

I have used it in place of sugar for years. I much prefer its taste to that of stevia, which leaves me with an aftertaste. Be careful using xylitol if you have digestive issues. Even if you don’t have such problems, use it in moderation as it is known to

I bought it to add to my homemade toothpowder. It is good for your teeth and improves the taste of dental powder. I use a mixture of baking soda, clay powder, calcium powder and xylitol. I gave up fluoride 10 years ago and have

I’ve tried many alternatives to sugar – including stevia – and they all have the same funky aftertaste … but not Xylitol. Xylitol tastes exactly like sugar, and it can be used exactly like sugar. I’ve read that it might even have antioxidant properties, which you can’t say about any other sugar substitute. There’s only one teensy little adverse side-effect with Xylitol: it can have laxative properties, so you probably want to use it carefully until you find your maximum tolerance.

I don’t actually use xylitol as a sweetener, I use it as a mouthwash. Studies have shown that xylitol strengthens tooth enamel and starves bad bacteria that cause tooth decay. I use a teaspoon (1 serving) at a frequency o
