The synergy between the two (BCAA & Glutamine) exists not only because they both provide many of the same anabolic and anti-catabolic effects, but under stressful conditions BCAAs can directly contribute to glutamine stores by acting as donors for glutamine formation. Among athletes, a relatively low-dose combination of BCAAs (3 grams) and glutamine (5 grams) supplemented during exercise has been shown to promote a 2-pound increase in muscle mass and a greater increase in strength compared to whey protein consumption milk only.
